Reverse Proof - Introduction
The Reverse Proof Coins - A different way of looking at America's Eagle coins

First minted in 1986, Gold and Silver American Eagles have been phenomenally popular among both collectors and investors due to their beauty and precious metal content. Featuring some of the most beautiful designs from classic American coinage--Adolph Weinman's Walking Liberty (Silver Eagle, from the Walking Liberty Half Dollar of 1916-1947) and Augustus St. Gaudens' rendition of Liberty and the Capitol (Gold Eagle, from the St. Gaudens $20 Double Eagle of 1907-1933), it's no wonder why a collection of American Eagles looks so impressive.

Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the American Gold Eagle and American Silver Eagle programs, the U.S. Mint released many special sets in 2006, which included pieces struck in a reverse proof finish. Reverse proofs--coins with frosted fields and mirrored devices--had never before been struck by the Mint. The Reverse Proof $50 Gold Eagles were found onlyin the 3-Piece Gold Sets which had a strict limit of 10,000 pieces. In addition, the Reverse Proof Silver Eagles were found in 3-coin sets with a mintage limit of 250,000. Both sets sold out (the gold sold out in a matter of hours) and proved to be phenomenal buys. In addition to being beautiful sets, the coins performed extraordinarily for investors, quickly being valued at many multiples of their issue price.

In December, 2007, the U.S. Mint released a special Platinum Eagle set that includes a Reverse Proof $50 Platinum Eagle. Like the Gold and Silver eagles before it, the $50 Reverse Proof Platinum Eagle features frosted fields with mirrored devices. The $50 Reverse Proof Platinum Eagle is available only in a set commemorating the 10th Anniversary of the American Platinum Eagle program, which began in 1997. The two-coin set contains a regular proof and reverse proof 1/2 Oz. $50 Platinum Eagle in a hardwood display box. Limited to one per household, the mintage of 30,000 sets should quickly sell out, as the Silver and Gold sets did.
